How do I apply to be a tutor listed on Wyzant?*
Registering is easy! Just head to the Wyzant Tutor Sign Up page and follow six simple steps. You’ll receive a response to your registration after it has been evaluated by the team at Wyzant.
- Choose the subjects you’d like to tutor.
- Enjoy a brief rundown of how the relationship works between tutors and Wyzant.
- Write your Free Response, providing detailed information about yourself, including any relevant tutoring or teaching experience, degrees, licenses, and certifications, educational history, mailing address, hourly rate, and travel radius for in-person lessons. It is important to be specific about your experience.
- Personalize your profile. It’s a good practice to upload a photo, create an eye-catching headline, and include information about your education and certifications in the appropriate fields.
- Read and agree to the Independent Tutor Agreement.
- Verify your email address.
Once your registration is approved, your profile will become active and you'll be ready to tutor any subject in which you've gained approval.
Can I apply for a tutor account with the Wyzant app?
Currently, the tutor application process can only be completed through the Wyzant site, using a laptop or desktop computer.
If you created a tutor account and your profile is in review, you will have to wait for your profile to be approved before you can use the Wyzant app.
How do I write an effective Free Response?
As a guideline, the best Free Responses are clear and to the point, while providing adequate details about your background and qualifications. Because your Free Response is one of the first things potential students see when viewing your profile, you want to ensure that the information presented demonstrates both your proficiency in the subjects you’ve listed on your profile and your ability to teach those subjects.
Your Free Response should include details about your degrees, certifications, test scores, honors, and relevant professional experience to ensure it adequately highlights your expertise. You should also use this section to provide as much detail as possible about any previous teaching or tutoring experience you may have. For example, how long you’ve taught, the typical age range of your students, the subjects you specialize in, and the context of your experience (i.e. one-on-one lessons, in a classroom setting, through a tutoring center, etc.). Don't forget to share what sets you apart from other tutors in this section!
We have a team called the Content Review Team that manually reviews each tutor's Free Response before it is listed on the platform. After reviewing a submission, they may request additional information or edits via email.
To make changes to your Free Response:
- Visit your tutor Dashboard, and click the downward-facing arrow next to your name in the top right corner of the screen.
- Click Profile.
- On the left navigation menu, click Free Response and Title.
Please note that Free Responses should always be written in full sentences, paragraph format. Free Responses in list or resume format will not be accepted. Check out an example of an effective Free Response here!
How do I check the status of my tutor application?*
All tutor applications to be listed on the platform are evaluated in the order they’re received by a member of the Wyzant team, and you’ll receive a response within 1 to 5 business days* of submitting it.
If additional information is needed, or there is an issue, you will receive an email with details on how to resubmit your application to be listed on the platform or contact Customer Support for further assistance by clicking the orange Support button on this page.
How can I list a subject to tutor on my profile?
In order to apply for a job through the platform, the applicable subject must be listed on your profile. To be able to list a subject on your profile, depending on the subject, you will be asked to either complete a brief proficiency quiz or submit your written qualifications for tutoring that subject.
Proficiency Quiz
You will only receive one opportunity to take each quiz, so please make sure you have adequate testing arrangements, including a stable internet connection and a reliable computer. If you feel the need to review the subject, please do so before starting the quiz.
Each quiz has 8-20 multiple choice questions and generally takes no longer than thirty minutes to complete per subject. You will also receive real-time results upon completion. The passing score for each quiz varies by subject; since they are designed to test competency, a perfect score is not necessary for approval.
Once you've passed a subject's proficiency quiz, you may choose to supply additional written qualifications for the subject. This step is not required, as passing a subject quiz immediately grants the ability to list that subject on your profile. Adding your individual qualifications to a subject you are able to list on your profile, however, gives students additional information relating to your knowledge of that subject area, and can definitely help your profile to stand out.
Written Subject Qualifications*
Some subjects require written qualifications instead of a proficiency quiz. All written qualifications that you provide are evaluated by Wyzant and can’t be substituted with outside qualifications such as copies of your certifications or degrees. Your subject qualifications will be visible on your profile listed on the Wyzant platform and give students key information they need when searching for their perfect tutor.
It's important that the information you provide is grammatically correct and clearly presented. Qualifications should always be written in full-sentence, paragraph format. Resumes and lists are not accepted. Be sure to include details pertaining to your educational background, relevant tutoring, teaching, and professional experience, as well as your methods pertaining to tutoring the subject material. Also, please be sure that each subject qualification you submit contains unique information- multiple subject qualifications with identical information will not be accepted.
To begin, Log in and head to the Subjects page of your account.
Why was my application to be listed on Wyzant not approved?
If you've received an email asking that you make changes to your application to be listed on the platform before resubmitting it for consideration, here are some suggestions on ways to improve your Free Response:
- Insufficient information: Your free response should provide specific and detailed information, such as education, academic test scores, degrees, professional and academic achievements, awards, licenses, certificates, teaching or tutoring experience, and other facts that provide students with key information about your expertise.
- Grammar and Formatting: Free Responses must be grammatically correct, written in English, and should not include lists, sentence fragments, and improper capitalization or punctuation.
- Resume or Cover Letter: Wyzant does not accept resumes or cover letters in place of the Free Response. This also includes links and URL's to outside content, portfolios, or profiles.
There are a limited number of opportunities to submit changes before an application is closed. The Wyzant Content Review Team considers many factors when evaluating a potential tutor profile, and not all applications are accepted to be listed on the Wyzant platform.
I submitted my application to be listed on Wyzant, now what?
Once you complete your registration, your information is sent directly to a member of the Wyzant team who will review it. Submissions are processed in the order they are received and this typically takes 7 to 10 business days, depending on volume.
After our Content Review team has reviewed your information, you’ll receive an email notification regarding the status of your account.
While your profile is pending review, feel free to upload a profile picture, take some subject proficiency quizzes, or submit written subject qualifications. Keep in mind that some submissions are not reviewed until your overall profile is approved and you will be unable to apply for jobs during this part of the process. We also recommend waiting to purchase a Background Check until you hear back from our Review Team.
Once your profile is approved to be listed on Wyzant, you'll be able to start applying for jobs and connecting with students!
*We are currently experiencing a high volume of new tutor profiles and subject qualifications and our team is working to process them as quickly as possible. Please allow 7-10 business days for our team to get back to you.
